Understand the data path, response characteristics and trade-offs of cloud-connected control.
Cloud controller exchanges measurements and control requests with a manufacturer cloud, OCPP platform or partner EMS. The asset keeps its existing internet connection; a separate local Modbus or RS485 connection is not required for that integration.
No local device bus The device communicates through its existing vendor cloud or partner platform.
Portfolio-ready Multiple remote sites can be imported and managed from one environment.
Internet-dependent Availability, latency and fallback behaviour depend on internet access and the vendor API.
The update frequency, command latency and available feedback differ per integration. Review the exact device page instead of assuming that every cloud connection behaves identically.
Choose a cloud connection for remote portfolios and devices that do not expose a suitable local protocol. Prefer a local Modbus, RS485 or local-API connection when deterministic response time, site autonomy during an internet outage, or a customer-specific fail-safe is essential.
| Consideration | Cloud connection | Local connection |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Uses the device's existing platform connection | Requires a supported local interface and network path |
| Portfolio onboarding | Well suited to geographically distributed sites | Usually commissioned site by site |
| Internet outage | Cloud communication becomes unavailable | Local control can continue, depending on the installation |
| Response | Depends on internet and platform latency | Usually more deterministic |
| Capabilities | Limited to functions exposed by the platform API | Limited to the local protocol and device driver |
Define a safe fallback at the device or gateway for internet loss, API timeouts or stale commands. A cloud integration must not be the only protection for equipment that needs a safety-critical response.
Confirm the expected control interval and fallback behaviour during engineering, then test both normal operation and loss of communication during commissioning.
