Keep the old device in the hierarchy for historical periods.
Add the new device beneath the same physical parent.
Set deactivation or activity information for the old device where supported.
Set activation or installation information for the new device.
Map new telemetry streams and validate units and signs.
Check alarms, reports, targets, and public displays across the transition.

Confirm both the new hierarchy position and the new stream mapping before retiring the previous device.
Do not join incompatible counters silently
A new inverter or meter can start from zero or use a different scaling factor. Reports must either handle the transition explicitly or aggregate validated energy deltas rather than subtracting unrelated counters.
